Quaint city getaway at Bilderberg Grand Hotel Wientjes Zwolle – Holland

For your next trip to Holland a visit to the north east of my wonderful country and the historical city Zwolle is definitely a unique and quaint city visit you won’t forget. As many cities in Europe it has a mixture of architectural styles, a huge variation of shops and many cute city squares to dine and drink the day & night away. With an old city wall, the renowned ‘Sassenpoort’ which is a beautiful intact remainder and 1 of the many old city gates, and several historic and even medieval buildings throughout the city, a visit to Zwolle will be a unique historic day out with all the offerings of a bigger modern city.

If you want to spend the night in a quiet part of Zwolle very near the city center I have the perfect hotel for you! A former mayors mansion with beautiful white facade, classy red sunshades, situated in a wide lane full of big oaks very near the train station. The ‘Bilderberg Grand Hotel Wientjes’ has a rich history, well know as a unique heritage building and used as an important central meeting point in the city Zwolle for many years.

Now back to the hotel…

Let me show you what exactly makes Bilderberg’s Grand Hotel Wientjes unique and why I can certainly recommend it to you as well.

The hotel is located just a 5 minutes’ walk away from the historic city center and the train station to the other side. Although it is very centrally located and near many vibrant areas the hotel’s lane with big oaks is a quiet and unique part of the city with views towards the city’s canals and citadel.

Surrounding the city Zwolle a star shaped structure of city walls remains, lined with trees to form a small forest park, which is true oasis around the city. When you walk from the city centre towards the hotel you can pass through here enjoying the city’s nature, but at the same time admire the historic city walls and unique buildings around it.

Unique features of Grand Hotel Wientjes:

  • Historic 4* hotel with an authentic façade,

  • Small-scale boutique hotel with an intimate vibe,

  • The team is very warm and welcoming,

  • The hotel is centrally located near the city center and station, but still in quiet and relaxing surroundings,

  • The rooms are modern with all amenities such as free coffee and tea facilities, free WIFI, flat-screen TV, mini bar, bath and air-conditioning, and the Royal Suite even has a 2 person Jacuzzi,

  • They offer 12 recently renovated conference rooms with all the latest modern equipment,

  • With dining and conference facilities in a unique historic wine cellar available as well,

  • As all Bilderberg hotels Grand Hotel Wientjes has an excellent breakfast buffet and dinner menu,

  • And even 2 restaurant choices for dinner either at the buzzing Grand Café or at the classy W restaurant.

About dinner

At the W restaurant dining in style is possible all day long. Dinner in this atmosphere with a menu based on fresh ingredients and local products is a true pleasure, and when the sun is out you can even dine on the hotel’s terrace in front of the beautiful façade. Right now when the weather is getting colder I prefer to try seasonal products of the region such as game dishes and special combinations of organic local produce.

This was well represented in our 4 course dinner in the cozy atmosphere of the living room styled Grand Café. All dishes from the W restaurant menu were available here as well and were perfectly combined for us by the new chef, paired with the best wines with true passion by our very friendly waiter/sommelier.

For us a night couldn’t have ended more perfectly at this hotel, with quality food in tasty and visually attractive dishes, served in a lovely casual atmosphere.

About Zwolle and surroundings

Holland has a lot to offer from big iconic cities like Amsterdam and The Hague to beautiful nature areas on the Veluwe and many quaint smaller cities like Zwolle, which are lesser known, but also definitely worth a visit! Remains of the medieval city Zwolle even date back to the Bronze Age and the actual city was founded by merchants many centuries A.D. Being a Hanseatic city it was full of trade with a rich history of wealth and architecture. Luckily many historic buildings are well preserved here because of the city’s active monumental committée.

Don’t forget to visit the bookstore Waanders, located in the historic Broerenchurch and the beautiful Museum de Fundatie if you appreciate culture and beautiful architectural features. Wander around the cobble stoned streets of the city to admire the big diversity of architecture and do some shopping in one of the many unique shops, like the concept store Loft. Or just have a drink on one of the many cute city squares, terraces or indoor verandas of the many café’s of Zwolle.

There are several big nature areas surrounding Zwolle, but if you like heritage and want to see more of Holland’s authentic architecture I would certainly recommend combining your visit to Zwolle with a day of sightseeing in the small and cute surrounding towns like Hattem as well. Here you will find even more original Dutch buildings, windmills, small museums and many cozy squares.

Hereby a little preview to show you the beauty this area has to offer:
