Romantic heritage shopping weekend at Bilderberg Château Holtmühle - Holland

Is Holland already on your bucket list? If not it totally should be and I’ll tell you why! As you might know by now I live in this beautiful European country and play tourist here as much as possible. I just love sharing the unique hotels and sights I find during these trips with you through my blogs, and a few weeks ago I found a true gem in the south part of Holland which is a real must visit.

If you’ve always dreamt of sleeping in a castle, preferably in a suite with Jacuzzi which combines authentic architecture perfectly with all the modern conveniences you need, and love heritage as much as I do, then you should definitely read on.

Especially if you like to explore the Dutch countryside, but don’t mind a bit of designer shopping for very sharp prices as well! Then a visit to Roermond while staying at the unique Bilderberg hotel Château Holtmühle is just what you need!

This historic castle is one of the most beautiful and unique locations of the Bilderberg Hotels chain in Holland and even dates back to the Middle Ages. The hotel combines heritage perfectly with modern luxury and the setting on the Dutch countryside, completely surrounded by nature, is one of the most romantic and tranquil settings you can imagine.

We had the pleasure to stay in the luxurious Honeymoon Suite, which provided all the amenities and space we needed and made our weekend a real romantic dream stay!

Located in a small town called Tegelen in the south part of Holland, we were situated very near Roermond but also less than an hours’ drive away from the Burgundian city of Maastricht in Limburg. Both must visits if you are traveling to Holland and want to see more than the usual cities and sights like Amsterdam and the Zaanse Schans.

In Limburg you will experience the real spirit of the Netherlands with a deep appreciation for good food, fine wines, beautiful nature surroundings, tranquil countryside and vibrant cities combined with quaint towns with lots of heritage.

Next to that Roermond happens to have a big designer outlet just next to the city center with a multitude of designer brands offering their collections with 30-70% off in a cute setting of colorful stores and coffeeshops all next to each other.

Although I’m not a huge designer brand shopper, the possibility to stay in the country side while being able to buy some quality leather Puma sneakers, a brand new Samsonite suitcase and a classy SuperTrash winter coat for an affordable price, only 10 minutes away from our hotel, was a great combination in my opinion.

And the fact that all sizes were generally on stock, the goods are all new and the setting of the Designer Outlet Roermond was very appealing with these colorful shop facades, and a spacious affordable parking area next to the small outlet city, was a welcoming surprise!

But now back to the hotel..Let me show you what made this castle hotel so unique to me through many of my own pictures and some of the hotel’s:

Unique features of Bilderberg Château Holtmühle:

  • Medieval 4* castle hotel with many modern features and spacious free parking facilities,

  • This small-scale hotel has 66 charming and atmospheric rooms, set on a rural estate surrounded by quaint towns and history,

  • Is centrally located in the south of Holland, near the German border, just 40 minutes’ drive from Dusseldorf airport,

  • The rooms are complete with all modern amenities, as free coffee and tea facilities, free WIFI, flat-screen TV, fridge, mini bar and air-conditioning. And our Suite even had a 2 person Jacuzzi and Nespresso machine,

  • The hotel offers 9 different meeting rooms and many business facilities as well as event and party space in a medieval setting, but naturally with all the latest equipment,

  • As all Bilderberg hotels Château Holtmühle offers an excellent breakfast buffet with freshly baked breads, and this wonderful view from the breakfast room,

  • The castle also has its own indoor swimming pool, sauna, Turkish steam bath, fitness room and several restaurants, which provides you with everything you need to not have to leave the hotel at all!

About dinner

This hotel not only has 1, but even 2 restaurants, one located at the back of the building in a glass veranda appropriately called d’Orangerie, and one at the front traditionally named: ‘Die Alde Heerlickheijt’, which is translated: ‘The Old Delishiousness’ from traditional Dutch. We had dinner at the second, which is located in the medieval vaulted cellars of the castle, expanded by a spacious glass veranda and outdoor terrace by the water, where you can enjoy drinks and lunch in the afternoon and modern French cuisine in the evening in a romantic setting.

Our lovely 4 course dinner prepared with fresh local ingredients and herbs from the hotel’s very own herb garden was paired with wines from the region. All enthusiastically served by our own sommelier who was as passionate about each dish and complementing wines as only a true Burgundian could.

A stay in the Honeymoon Suite in this beautiful historic setting couldn’t be more perfect than with a dinner in this lovely atmosphere.

Things to do

If you like nature and heritage the location of Château Holtmühle is perfect. It’s surrounded by an extensive estate filled with small streams, a large pond, a private herb garden and even a traditional moat. Behind the castle runs an historic walking trail which leads to other authentic villages only a few miles away, providing beautiful nature settings during the walk.

Next to hiking, renting a bike to explore the surroundings is the perfect pastime here, but you can also visit the renowned Gardens of Arcen Castle nearby, the Hertog Jan Brewery in Arcen or the Museum Van Bommel Van Dam in Venlo if you like to experience a little bit of local culture and history as well.

And if you want to do some more shopping the cities Venlo, Roermond, Maastricht and even Eindhoven and Dusseldorf are all within 10 to 50 minutes’ drive from the hotel.

I hope I was able to inspire you to visit my country and this beautiful area soon! If you need more tips for your visit to Holland you can check my previous blogs: here, here, here, here, here & here:
