Top 3 hotels in Mühlviertel – hidden gem of Upper Austria

  • 9 min read

Mid-April 2026 I revisited the unique Mühlviertel region in the north of Austria, known as Oberösterreich, or Upper Austria, for 1 week to enjoy the pure nature, wellness and gastronomy, with stays at 3 top hotels.

Much more about that later on in this blog, based on my experiences, and as always supplemented by many of my own pictures!

With its wide landscapes, dense forests, clear streams, relaxed friendly people, quiet villages and traditional stone farmhouses, this region feels like a well-kept secret, a true hidden gem in Austria!

Road trip & outdoor heaven Mühlviertel - Upper Austria

The perfect place to visit on a road trip from the Netherlands, due to its location in the north of Austria, which is just an 11-hour drive away. But it can also be reached by train in about 12-14 hours. Ideal for a few-day-stopover on a longer road trip as well. Or for a relaxing weekend getaway by plane.

The region borders the Bohemian Forest of the Czech Republic with high-altitude meadows and mighty granite formations.

This provides great settings for hiking, cycling and forest bathing, with trails winding through ancient woodlands and past charming villages, with friendly people.

But also for slow travel and rejuvenation through top-notch wellness and local cuisine.

Mühlviertel is characterized by its sustainable agriculture, historic breweries, and untouched nature, perfect for mindful experiences away from crowded Alpine hotspots.

The local cuisine is pure and delicious and the region’s cultural heritage shines through its castles, abbeys and traditional craftsmanship, a refreshing contrast to busier Austrian destinations.

How to get to Mühlviertel

By plane:

The closest major hub is Linz, Upper Austria’s capital, with its airport offering connections from Vienna, Frankfurt, London, and other cities, or you can fly directly to Munich.

By train:

You can also take the (night) train directly to Linz or Munich. From Vienna International Airport the train to Linz takes less than 2 hours, and from Munich you can take the train to get to Passau in 2-2,5 hours. From both cities a bus, taxi or shuttle connection can take you to the Mühlviertel region in about 1 hour.

Public transport combined with hotel pick-ups can work well if you want to travel more eco-conscious. Many hotels, including the ones below, offer shuttle services or can arrange transfers.

By car:

Driving there, the region is well-connected via the A7 or B roads, which takes about 10-12 hours from the Netherlands via Germany, with scenic routes through the hills. Rental cars can give you extra flexibility for exploring the many unique spots in the region and hidden gems along the way.

Top 3 hotels Mühlviertel Upper Austria – each different & unique

What makes Mühlviertel truly stand out is its offering of exceptional affordable luxury (wellness) hotels located near each other in this tranquil landscape.

I got to test 3 unique properties here, each tailored to a different audience, yet all with the region’s signature tranquility, natural settings, excellent food and hospitality.

1. Hotel Guglwald - Affordable luxury & Slow Wellness

If deep relaxation and mindful rejuvenation tops your list, Hotel Guglwald is the place to visit. This historic 4-star wellness hotel is located in the heart of the Bohemian Forest, surrounded by the quiet hills of northern Mühlviertel.

This hotel embraces Slow Wellness, a lifestyle philosophy that prioritizes intention, presence, and balance over speed and productivity. It’s much more than lounging by a pool, but about reducing stress and nurturing long-term mental and physical health in a supportive environment. My new favourite philosophy!

Unique features Guglwald:

  • The hotel looks stunning and almost resembles a castle with a history dating back to an Inn from 1841, from which their hospitality story started!

  • Each room is unique with its own theme, like my authentic 35 m2 Leiterwagen suite, with different facilities, like a large balcony, free standing bath tub and some even with a private sauna and Jacuzzi. Get a taste through this gallery:

  • Everything you need for a restorative stay is included, making this a true affordable luxury hotel in my opinion. The room booking also entails a delicious and very generous breakfast buffet, a wellness buffet with soup, warm dishes, salads, and afternoon coffee and cake, plus a multi-course gourmet dinner every evening.

  • The absolute highlight of the hotel is the expansive 4,200 m² Spa and wellness area, to which access from 9 am to 8 pm is included too. Perfect to unwind completely in the 10 different saunas, steam baths, Jacuzzi's, relax rooms, treatment center and heated in-and outdoor pool, as you can see here:

  • Outside there are spacious meadows and a natural pond with plenty of sun loungers and hammocks, ideal for sunny relax days.

  • Activities like guided hikes (with optional picnic baskets), yoga sessions, and access to a modern fitness room with TechnoGym equipment complement the indoor offerings. Massage and beauty treatments can be booked, which I can highly recommend here!

  • And from April, rental bikes are included and available to explore the beautiful countryside.

  • There is live music in the weekends at the hotel bar and lounge.

  • And the warm, attentive hospitality of the friendly staff and owners of this 6th generation family-run hotel truly completed the experience.

  • Hotel Guglwald offers true relaxation and genuine rejuvenation for an affordable luxury price, where your only task is to arrive, enjoy good food, wellness and let the serene Mühlviertel landscape work its magic.

2. Bergergut – Romantic ‘Enjoy Hotel’ for couples & foodies

For couples craving romance, intimacy, and exceptional cuisine, Bergergut stands out as a true hidden gem. This adults-only retreat is a place to slow down and just enjoy. Especially the food here is delicious, pure and of great quality.

With only 36 stylish double rooms and design suites, located in a quiet village surrounded by nature, Bergergut feels like an exclusive hideaway far from mass tourism, combining heartfelt hospitality with high standards.

Unique features Bergergut:

  • This hotel is run by the most friendly and welcoming team, led by the 6th generation of the same family that founded this hotel with love and passion for local ingredients, hospitality and true craftmanship!

  • The individually designed suites, all with their own romantic details and some with a fire place, free standing bath tub or Jacuzzi, create the perfect setting for quality time together in a tranquil romantic setting.

  • Get an impression through this gallery with pictures of our 2 very unique rooms:

  • Much is already included in the room rate, also making Bergergut an affordable luxury hotel in my book: Spa access and sauna use, daily à la carte breakfast, supplemented by a buffet, grandma’s homemade pastries in the afternoon and a multi-course gourmet dinner each evening.

  • The hotel’s kitchen currently holds 3, and soon even 4, Gault & Millau toques, delivering upscale regional cuisine that highlights local ingredients with the creativity and finesse of Top Chef Thomas Hofer and team.

  • Their brand-new 1,000 m² Wald Spa provides an intimate wellness experience, with 3 saunas, a steam bath, several relax rooms, a heated in-/outdoor pool, plenty of sun loungers and (massage) treatments bookable.

  • You can even rent a Spa room for 2, with sauna, steam bath and Jacuzzi privately for 1 or 2,5 hours with sparkling wine and many other treats included.

  • The offering of unique daily activities and exclusive cooking classes with Chef Thomas Hofer make a stay here extra special and are all included in your booking.

  • Bergergut is perfect for couples that appreciate quality, class, authentic charm, and delicious local flavors. During a stay here you can enjoy the many romantic corners in and around the hotel in its beautiful gardens, and just relax.

  • But you can also explore the stunning natural settings on foot or by bike, as many easy trails are just outside the hotel.

  • Open seating at large tables in the restaurant encourages casual conversations and genuine friendships over fine dining.

  • In my experience the solo traveler concept creates a super friendly atmosphere, which truly enables genuine connections and fun conversations, as everyone is easy-going and open to engage.

  • As the hotel is located high up a hill, the view from the rooms, restaurant, extensive terrace and Spa is nothing less than spectacular. All facing south, looking out over the lush region below, with quaint villages and the mighty Alps beyond.

  • The 2,000 m² wellness area impresses with a heated indoor pool, natural swimming pond, outdoor Jacuzzi, a solarium, gym, and 6 different saunas, open from 10 am till 8-9 pm.

  • Daily sports and activity programs keep things dynamic, yet optional, with guided hiking and mountain biking, fitness and yoga classes, brewery tours, and other unique experiences offered.

  • Evenings are extra fun here at the in-house nightclub and rustic Alpine Hut (alm) with theme parties, karaoke, gin tastings, and live entertainment.

  • The fact that AVIVA has its own beer brewery, alm and night club, besides the many other facilities, makes it extra special.

  • As well as its many sustainability projects, as holder of the Austrian Ecolabel and EU Ecolab accreditations, due to their environmental efforts. Think: solar panels that produce 70% of their own energy, a rainwater cistern to save and re-use water and 75% of their groceries being locally sourced, among many other initiatives.

Why Mühlviertel should be on your travel list

These 3 hotels: Guglwald for deep slow wellness, Bergergut for romantic gourmet escapes, and AVIVA for joyful solo adventures, are located close enough in the Mühlviertel region to combine, while exploring the same stunning surroundings.

Mühlviertel proves that true luxury often lies in simplicity: fresh air, pristine nature, excellent food, and the freedom to slow down.

This tranquil corner of Upper Austria offers the perfect balance of peace and adventure.

Practical tips:

  • Check cross-border rules if driving between countries.

  • Calculate some extra time for scenic stops and village exploration.

  • And look for gas stations in the smaller towns and away from the highway to save on fuel costs, generally fuel is less expensive in Austria than Germany.

  • If needed, check the hotel shuttle times on the hotels' websites and book transfers in advance.

  • Pack hiking boots and layers, as weather can change quickly in these mountainous and forestry areas, but a nice hike in this region with its many easy trails, should not be missed.

  • You can pay with Euros, both cash and card are accepted, but it's always handy to have some cash on hand in the small villages.

  • Visit in spring for flowery meadows and mild sunny weather, in summer for warmer temperatures and outdoor swimming. Go in autumn for beautiful fall colors and mushroom foraging and in winter for spectacular snowy settings and cozy Spa days.
