One of these hotel chains, that has no less than 4 locations on Mauritius, and 1 on the Maldives is the fabulous LUX* Resorts. All LUX* hotels in Mauritius have been recognized among the best in the world by global rating experts in the 2024 Forbes Travel Guide.

Known for their retro-chic design, boho vibe, abundance of facilities and high level of service. During my last trip to Mauritius I had the pleasure to test 4 luxurious hotels, about which you can read more in my Mauritius like a VIP blog as well, including 2 of the LUX* locations, starting with:

Lux Grand Gaube

Located on the northern coast of Mauritius you will find the secluded paradise of Lux Grand Gaube. Surrounded by lush tropical gardens and overlooking 3 stunning bays, this 5-star haven has a highly photogenic retro-chic design.

It’s no surprise that this hotel has won several awards already, such as: ‘most Instagrammable resort in the world for 2023’ by Luxury Travel Advisor and the label: ‘Mauritius’ leading resort’ from the World Travel Awards last year.

Unique features:

  • Lux Grand Gaube is set on a large estate filled with impressive Banyan trees amidst lush tropical gardens, right along the north coast with wide views over the Indian Ocean.

  • Its unique features include distinctive architecture by Kelly Hoppen, a renowned British interior designer. Best described as a retro-chic design, with traditional Mauritian influences, with thatched-roof pavilions, lush surroundings and elegant contemporary touches.

  • You can choose from different room types, varying from 51 m2 superior rooms with sea and garden view, to several suites, some even with a bubble bath on your own outdoor terrace. Or go for even more luxury with a villa that includes sheltered private beach access and your own butler. I stayed in the wellness junior suite with cove view, that looks like this:

  • Lux Grand Gaube is located privately on a peninsula with 2 coves, and several swimming pools, offering a total of 3 private beaches, of which 1 cove and pool is adults-only.

  • Perfect for relaxing but also water sports activities such as complementary snorkeling and paddleboarding, but also traditional pirogue boat trips, all offered at the hotel.

  • At the LUX ME Spa Eastern and Western therapies are combined for rejuvenation of the body and mind with a multitude of treatments to choose from. With a beauty salon and barber shop especially for men.

  • There are 3 tennis courts, even a padel court, an extensive gym and no less than 2 cinemas, 1 indoor and 1 outdoor!

  • With 5 restaurants, incl.a Peruvian, adults-only and Turkish restaurant, a rum tree house, café, G&T bar and burger shack, the gastronomic offering at this resort is very extensive.

  • Inti is the first Peruvian restaurant on Mauritius, chosen as the nr.1 restaurant in Mauritius by the TripAdvisor Traveler’s Choice award of 2023, and as the 4th best restaurant in Africa.

  • Our dinner here was a surprisingly unique experience and a fun night out! The live music, atmospheric setting, original menu, flavorful dishes, delicious cocktails and high-quality food made it a true gastronomic feast, which should not be missed.

  • Lux Grand Gaube also offers unique experiences such as rum tasting sessions, yoga on the beach, and cultural performances showcasing the vibrant heritage of Mauritius.

  • The hotel is highly active in sustainable and local initiatives, such as recycling, reducing, donations and community projects. For all this they have achieved a 5 Earths rating by Earthcheck since 2021.

Lux Belle Mare

If I have to choose my favourite between the 2 Lux Hotels I stayed at on Mauritius, albeit only for 1 night, I think I would choose Lux Belle Mare on the east coast.

Set along the pristine white sands of Belle Mare Beach, this 5-star retreat has the most space and idyllic setting in my opinion, and since it was recently refurbished it looks even more clean and fresh than Lux Grand Gaube.

Also the facilities offered here are even more extensive, creating a unique blend of luxury, gastronomy and relaxation.

Unique features:

  • The minimalistic colonial design of the buildings, the stylish interior with vintage touches, all surrounded by tropical plants is highly photogenic. Not to speak of the wide and long sandy beach and stunning lagoon with the sunrise, right in front of the hotel.

  • Besides the extensive beach with a multitude of sun beds, Lux Belle Mare offers several swimming pools, including a stunning infinity pool overlooking the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.

  • Also here there are various suites and villas to choose from, ranging from junior, to wellness, ocean view, beach front and family suites. All with a minimum of 60 m2, which makes them quite spacious and very comfortable, with all the amenities you can expect from a 5 star hotel. I stayed in the stunning junior suite, which even had a stylish walk-in closet and mixology bar, which looks like this:

  • The hotel's wellness center provides a multitude of treatments inspired by traditional Mauritian techniques, while fitness enthusiasts can enjoy an extensive gym and various outdoor activities such as tennis, cycling and complementary water sports.

  • With 5 restaurants, among which their signature Indian restaurant, very stylish gastronomic Chinese restaurant, an excellent and extensive buffet, several bars, cafés and even a food truck and ice cream parlour by the pool. Exquisite cuisine and other delights are offered at every corner of the hotel, from beachfront to fine dining experiences. Get an impression here:

  • We had an atmospheric sunset dinner at the Beach Rouge Club and Restaurant, with live DJ and a delicious Mediterranean menu that should not be missed!

  • Other unique features include a dedicated kids club and teen zone, as well as babysitting, among others services that ensure that families can have a relaxing vacation as well.

  • The hotel also offers unique experiences such as private beach picnics, sunset cruises, and cultural excursions to explore the island's heritage. As well as many free water activities, such as SUP-ping, snorkeling, glass-bottom boat and more.
